They In Me

Although I primarily work in metal and wood, I am drawn to the intricate geometry and rich history of quilts, a fascination that inspired the creation of “They In Me.”

“They in Me” invites viewers to reflect on their heritage, recognize their ancestry’s beauty and complexity, and celebrate the unique essence that defines each individual. It is a reminder of those who came before us and a testament that within each of us lies a mosaic of stories.

I meticulously arranged hundreds of metal pieces to create “They In Me.” Each piece is a tribute to my ancestors, whose identities are woven into the fabric of my being. While the pattern and individual pieces might seem uniform at first glance, because of the bend, each piece is unique. Despite its metallic composition, the bend evokes the fluidity of the fabric that quilts are traditionally made from.

In the heart of the piece lies the “Maverick square,” a representation of myself. It serves as a nexus where the influences of the people who came before me converge to create a singular yet multifaceted identity.

This piece is 48″x34″.
