I’m Karl Hale,

an artist and engineer.

My sculptures bring together intuitive, right-brained art and logical, left-brained science. I hope that people who identify with either end of that spectrum find inspiration when they view my creations.

As an engineer-turned-public artist, I am passionate about creating art that is accessible and engaging for all walks of life.

My process

Due to my background in engineering, much of my art is based on mathematical concepts. I frequently use geometric patterns such as circle packing and tessellations to create interactive works filled with movement and familiar shapes that speak to younger (and less young) audiences.

I primarily work in steel and aluminum, which are safe, low-maintenance, and durable materials. Throughout the years, I have dabbled in wood carving, bronze work, marble runs, life-size mazes, and steel public art. In short, I am always exploring new mediums for my ideas.

By expressing math and engineering through art, I hope to inspire creative thought in people of diverse ages and backgrounds.

Let’s make something together.
