The basic geometry of this tessellation is one of the oldest designs used in Islamic art. It is called The Compassionate Breath with the 8-pointed star representing the inhaled breath and the 4-pointed star representing the exhaled breath. The Compassionate is one of the titles of Allah.
The scribe-marks behind the dimensional piece are the actual marks that would be used to create this pattern anciently using only a straight-edge and a compass. They represent the spiritual creation that always precedes the physical creation.
The layered aspect of this piece represents our approach to the divine.
This piece is made of Baltic birch and is 19 inches high, 19 inches wide, and 1.5 inches thick.
